Crystal healing is an alternative medical technique in which crystals and other stones are used to cure ailments and protect against disease. Proponents of this technique believe that crystals act as conduits for healing. They are allowing positive, healing energy to flow into the body as negative, disease-causing energy flows out.
Crystal Healing has a long and colorful history. Medicine men, shamans, and healers have used the power of crystals for ages. Over the last five thousand years, mystics and magi have taught us that we are a big part of the Earth. The ancient art of laying crystals on the body is in accordance with energy centers known as chakras. Crystals carry a vibration that activates certain energy centers within our electromagnetic system. This way it’s having a positive effect on our entire body system. For thousands of years crystals and stones have been revered as mysterious objects of beauty and power. In addition to being used for healing, they have been used to enhance daily life, to divine the future, for protection and for spiritual development. Crystals work well with Reiki, acting as magnifiers and helpers, although they were not a part of the traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho in Japan.
But despite the fact that crystal healing has seen an upsurge in popularity in recent years, this alternative treatment is not popular with most medical doctors and scientists. Many of them refer to crystal healing as a pseudoscience. Scientifically speaking, there is no evidence that crystal healing can be used to cure diseases. Diseases have never been found to be the result of a so-called energy flow in the body. Furthermore, no scientific studies have shown that crystals and gems can be differentiated by chemical composition or color to treat a particular ailment.
Nevertheless, healing crystals remain popular at health spas and at New Age health clinics, sometimes incorporated into related practices of massage and Reiki. The use of crystals in such environments may help induce relaxation.
Working with Crystal Healing
Crystal healing proponents believe that crystals and gemstones have properties that facilitate healing. Many sites promoting crystal healing allege that the history of this practice is ancient. Dating back at least 6,000 years to the time of the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia. Ancient Egyptians are also referenced on such sites as being among the first people to have adorned themselves with crystals. Including lapis lazuli, carnelian and turquoise, so they can ward off illness and negative energy.
But the philosophy of modern crystal healing is based on traditional concepts borrowed from Asian cultures, most notably the Chinese concept of life-energy. Also mentioned by the Hindu or Buddhist concept of chakras, which are vortices of this life-energy. They are connected to the physical and supernatural elements of the body.
In crystal healing, stones are assigned various properties. Healers have different ideas about which stones possess which properties. Amethyst, for example, is believed by some to be beneficial for the intestines, green aventurine helps the heart and yellow topaz provides mental clarity. Colors red through violet are associated with seven chakra points on the body.
During a treatment session, a crystal healer may place various stones or crystals on your body aligned with these chakra points. They are mostly in the regions above the head, on the forehead, on the throat, on the chest, on the stomach, on the gut, and on the genital area. The stones used and their positioning may be chosen for the symptoms reported by the patient. This is all influenced by the healer’s knowledge of the chakra philosophy. This is a philosophy that is largely dismissed by practitioners of Western medicine.
Crystal healing also involves the use of crystals and stones worn on the body or placed under pillows to ward off sickness. They are there to shed negative energy or absorb positive energy.
How Crystal Healing works
While there are no scientific studies on the efficacy of crystal healing, there is a study that suggests that crystal healing may induce a placebo effect in a patient who receives this type of treatment. Placebo effects are effects that accompany a treatment that are not directly due to the treatment itself acting on the disease of the patient. In other words, a person may feel better after undergoing crystal healing treatment, but there is no scientific proof that this result has anything to do with the crystals being used during the treatment.
In a certain research there were two groups for testing the crystal healing. Many participants in both groups reported feeling a warm sensation in the hand holding the crystal or fake crystal, as well as an increased feeling of overall well being. Those who had been primed to feel these effects reported stronger effects than those who had not been primed. However, the strength of these effects did not correlate with whether the person in question was holding a real crystal or a fake one. Those who believed in the power of crystals were twice as likely as non-believers to report feeling effects from the crystal.
“There is no evidence that crystal healing works over and above a placebo effect. That is the appropriate standard to judge any form of treatment.
While these treatments might make you feel better temporarily, there is no proof that they can actually cure diseases or treat health conditions. If you’re suffering from a serious medical issue, you should seek treatment from a licensed physician, not an alternative healer. While the healer can make you feel relaxed ease your symptoms, always visit a professional for a serious condition.
Is Crystal Healing Safe?
Crystal healers become healers by passing a certification course, often offered over the Internet. From “natural medicine” universities or clinics, many of which are not accredited by any central organization. Currently, there are no state or federal laws that regulate or standardize the practice of crystal healing or the licensing of crystal healers specifically. In some states, this type of alternative treatment may fall under the category of massage or bodywork therapy. In those states, crystal healers may be required to obtain a license in order to practice their trade.
Some medical doctors tolerate crystal healing to a limited degree, seeing it as a therapy that can induce relaxation, which ultimately is therapeutic for stress management. Those seeking a crystal healer, however, should be careful not to forgo legitimate treatment for life-threatening disease.
Chakra Healing and Balancing
One of the simplest ways to help balance the whole chakra system is to place a stone of the appropriate colour on each area. This will give each chakra a boost of its own vibration without altering its energies or the overall harmony of the system. It is believed that the interaction between the stones and chakras will return the chakra into healthy vibration, therefore healing the part of the body affected.
Simply by placing a different beneficial stone on each of the seven chakras can be a general tonic to strengthen and tone up the entire system. If you lay your collection of stones out so that you can easily see them all you will find your attention goes to the best choice of stone for each chakra. It is a good idea to place a grounding stone, like smoky quartz. This is placed between the feet to act as an anchor. Place the stones on the lowest chakra first, and move upwards than proceed with your Reiki healing session as you would normally do. When removing the stones, always remove the highest one first, leaving the lowest stone last.
Before doing any energy work on a person, I find cleaning the room with a combination of crystals and Reiki beneficial. I also like to invoke angels, guides, ascended masters, fairies, and any other spirits I feel a connection to at the time. My personal preference to clean with is to use Clear Quartz Points. You can use any crystals or shapes that feel right to you. First, I open the windows to let clean energy in. Then, starting at the east, I make CKR symbols and place them in each of the corners with the intention of it keeping the room clean and protected. I proceed in a clockwise manner around the room. When I am done, I go to the center of the room and do a double CKR to the front, sides, and back of the room. If you are not attuned to these symbols, you can still follow this formula. If that’s the case make sure you channel Reiki through the crystals and keep them pointed at the area you want clean and protected. After doing this please thank not only the spiritual energies you have invoked, but the crystals too.
At the beginning of a session it is likely that you will be asked to either sit on a chair or lie on a therapist’s couch. Your therapist will then help to induce a deep state of relaxation before beginning to place crystals on or around your body.
During the session you may experience some slight tingling and it had also been reported that existing issues may slightly intensify before being released. This is thought to be caused by the shifting energies within the body. Should this happen your therapist will be able to give you advice on what to do.
For instance, if I’m seeking clarity on a difficult decision, I’ll choose a crystal that helps open my 6th chakra, or third eye, and I’ll hold it in my hand while I’m meditating, or place it right between my eyebrows. I’ll choose another crystal for my heart chakra if my meditation is geared towards love or compassion. In this case, I actually lie down and place a crystal right over my chest.
During a Reiki session, where I’m offering energy healing to another person, I use crystals to help amplify the healing, and to identify where there are energy blocks or too much energy. Reiki sessions vary from healer to healer, much like a personal training session would vary depending on the trainer – no two sessions look the same.
By using a pendulum, which is a conical shaped crystal attached by a chain, I can detect any energy imbalances. Using this assessment, I can then tailor the session to help bring healing to that area. I also just like to hold crystals in my hand. I also carry them in my pocket, keep them in my purse, wear them as jewelry, or keep them near me while I’m working. Just having them near me brings a sense of calm. It always reminds me that there’s more to life than the minutia of whatever it is I’m doing.
If I’m traveling, I’ll bring crystals that have a grounding effect on the body since, well, when you’re traveling, you’re literally not grounded, which can throw you off energetically.
Another Crystal Cleansing Technique
The first thing that you should do when you buy a crystal is to cleanse it. Not only do crystals vibrate energy, but they also hold onto energy. This makes them less effective at healing. You want your crystals to shine bright, and having collected energy and dust can literally and metaphorically make them dull and lackluster. Same happens when they sit in a store.
To cleanse your crystals, hold them in your hand while running them under cool water. While you do this, you can also “program” your crystals to for a certain intent. If you just bought a clear quartz and you want to use it to help you concentrate, use this thought and set the intent into the crystal as you hold it. Other ways to cleanse your crystals would include setting them outside in the sun to recharge for 24 hours. I find that burying my crystals in the dirt helps, too. And if you really want to be advanced, you can bury your crystals on a full moon and then unearth them on a new moon. This way your crystals are programmed around the moon’s magnetic field.
